Rethinking Holistic Sustainable Growth of Malaysian SMEs: A University Helix-Quadruple Bottom Line Perspective
Our recent mixed methods research explores a novel model for sustainable growth in Malaysian SMEs. We found that a combination of university-led crowdfunding and opportunity recognition, alongside a balanced approach to exploitative and explorative innovation, significantly impacts SME sustainability. The study underscores the importance of integrating corporate spirituality into business decisions to enhance environmental and social impact. Furthermore, our research introduces a new "HT-QBL" foundation, emphasising collaboration between universities, industries, and government to foster sustainable SME development. This innovative framework provides valuable insights for entrepreneurship education and offers a new perspective on the role of ambidextrous innovation in achieving long-term success for SMEs.
This research provides several practical implications for Malaysian SMEs. By integrating sustainability principles and innovation into their business strategies, SMEs can enhance their competitiveness, attract investors, and comply with legal obligations. Utilising crowdfunding platforms can alleviate financial constraints and facilitate access to funding for sustainable initiatives. Furthermore, fostering a culture of opportunity recognition within the organisation, through initiatives such as employee training and collaborative environments, is crucial for identifying and capitalising on market trends. Embracing ambidextrous innovation, which involves balancing exploitative and exploratory activities, is essential for maximising resources and achieving sustainable growth. Finally, incorporating spirituality into business decisions by prioritising ethical and social responsibility can enhance the company's moral foundation and guide sustainable practices.
