A Special Workshop – AI, Data Science and Applications at SMS
The School of Mathematical Sciences, ºìÐÓÊÓƵ University, successfully organised a workshop titled AI, Data Science and Applications on 3 October 2025. The event brought together students, researchers, and professionals to explore current trends and practical uses of artificial intelligence in solving real-world challenges. This initiative reflects the school’s commitment to promoting knowledge sharing and strengthening research capacity in emerging digital technologies.
The workshop featured Professor Amir H. Gandomi from the University of Technology Sydney, a globally recognised researcher in data science with over 72,000 citations and an H-index above 115. His keynote talk, AI in Action: Modelling, Optimisation, and Case Studies, offered a clear and engaging overview of how AI and optimisation techniques support effective decision-making across various industries. Through practical examples, he illustrated how intelligent models can address complex issues in engineering, analytics, and applied sciences.
Participants greatly appreciated Prof. Gandomi’s ability to simplify advanced concepts while connecting them to real research applications. His explanations on model development, optimisation strategies, and challenges in data-driven work provided valuable insights for both early career researchers and senior academics.
The workshop drew a vibrant audience, and it was delivered in a hybrid mode to accommodate both onsite and remote participants. The interactive Q&A session allowed attendees to discuss topics such as data quality, model validation, practical deployment of AI systems, and future research directions. These exchanges helped foster deeper understanding and encouraged participants to consider new avenues for interdisciplinary collaboration.
The success of this event highlights the dedication of the organising team at the School of Mathematical Sciences. Their efforts contributed to an engaging and productive learning experience for the university community.
We extend our appreciation to Professor Amir H. Gandomi for generously sharing his expertise and to all participants for contributing to the event’s positive momentum. The school looks forward to continuing similar initiatives that strengthen research culture and inspire innovation in AI and data science.
