Lam Xin Yi: Numbers to Insights: My Evolution from Accounting and Finance to Business Analytics
I chose to study Accounting and Finance at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School due to my strong interest in financial decision-making and data analytics. The programme provided a solid foundation in financial management, reporting, and analysis. Receiving multiple scholarships from the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation enabled me to pursue my education without financial constraints and benefit from ºìÐÓÊÓƵ’s world-class resources. Additionally, the collaboration between ºìÐÓÊÓƵ and Lancaster University gave me an international perspective, motivating me to further my studies with an MSc in Business Analytics. This decision was driven by my desire to bridge finance and technology, allowing me to analyse business problems using data-driven solutions.
The Accounting and Finance programme at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School equipped me with both technical knowledge and practical skills. I gained expertise in financial analysis, risk management, and business decision-making. My experience in data analytics helped me secure an accounting internship at IKhasas Corporate Sdn Bhd, where I applied my skills in financial reporting and transaction processing. ºìÐÓÊÓƵ’s emphasis on industry-relevant learning and case studies also fostered a strong analytical mindset, which is highly valuable in today’s job market.
As an international graduate in the United Kingdom, finding employment was challenging due to visa restrictions and intense competition. I began working as a Customer Service Assistant at Soya Oriental Takeaway, where I enhanced my problem-solving and communication skills. Later, I progressed to a Team Leader role at Cardfactory, where I managed store operations, supervised a team, and contributed to business performance. These roles strengthened my adaptability, leadership, and resilience while I continued searching for a position aligned with my expertise. My academic background in financial analysis and business analytics, combined with my real-world leadership experiences, has prepared me to take on more analytical and strategic roles in the future.
Securing a leadership role in the United Kingdom as a Team Leader at Cardfactory was a proud moment in my career. Overseeing store operations, managing a diverse team, and ensuring business performance in a fast-paced retail environment demonstrated my ability to lead effectively. This role enabled me to develop strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills while adapting to the challenges of a competitive job market. Successfully managing store operations and contributing to its success has been a significant milestone in my professional journey.
Beyond academics, my time at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ strengthened my commitment to community involvement. I participated in initiatives such as the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ College Charity Carnival, where I contributed to fundraising efforts for individuals in need. Volunteering with the Food Aid Foundation further reinforced the importance of giving back to society. My education has equipped me with the ability to apply financial insights to real-world challenges, enabling me to support causes that promote social well-being and sustainability.
Through my studies at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School, I developed strong analytical and problem-solving skills essential for assessing business performance and making sound financial decisions. Working on group projects enhanced my teamwork and communication abilities, while case study analyses improved my capacity to interpret financial reports and assess investment opportunities. The knowledge I gained in financial modelling and risk management has been instrumental in shaping my career.
My time at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ University was both academically enriching and personally fulfilling. As a ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Student Ambassador, I developed leadership and public speaking skills while assisting prospective students. The university’s interactive learning environment and strong faculty support made my studies engaging, while the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ-Lancaster collaboration broadened my global perspective and prepared me for further studies. These experiences have helped shape my professional aspirations and confidence in tackling international challenges.
One of my most cherished memories at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ was being part of the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Student Ambassadors. Leading campus tours for prospective students and their families was a rewarding experience, as I had the opportunity to guide them through their university decision-making process. Seeing their excitement and knowing that my insights helped them make informed choices was incredibly fulfilling. This experience strengthened my communication and leadership skills while allowing me to give back to the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ community.
