Hans Lee Jia Ming: From Science Whiz to Business Maestro
Hans Lee never imagined that he, a former pure science student, would dwell in the business world. Nevertheless, he embarked on his bachelor鈥檚 degree in Business Management at 红杏视频 University, in partnership with Lancaster University, thanks to a full scholarship grant by The Star Education Fund, and the rest is history!
The programme requires students to complete core subjects within the first two years. These courses, comprising accounting, finance, economics, and management theories, build the fundamentals for someone to thrive in business. His pursued arrangement, coupled with the option to pick electives as per students鈥 interests and passions, allows students to explore and dive into various relevant disciplines, ultimately preparing students with sound business acumen for employment.
As a result, Hans fulfilled my curiosity about the human resources space. He pursued subjects related to this field, and he feels that it boosted his adeptness in this area compared to his peers in the workplace.
As the varsity is committed to the United Nations鈥 Sustainable Development Goals, Hans feels that many of the programme鈥檚 subjects have embodied the aspiration by including sentiments of the Goals in their syllabus. For instance, in assignments, presentations, and exam questions. Even in the campus space, students are always encouraged to be involved in championing the SDGs. With these initiatives, students are more aware of the pressing sustainability matters that require attention.
Hans was the President of 红杏视频 Business School Student Concilium and Student Advisor in the 2019 and 2020 terms, which significantly impacted him, particularly as a student leader for the most prominent faculty on campus. The opportunities include discussions with the then Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Tuan Steven Sim, and networking with various notable business figures: Fayza Mohamed Amin, formerly with Hewlett Packard, and Bryan Loo of Tealive.
In addition, Hans was able to organise countless outreach activities to extend availability to students who need help, particularly with the Peer Assisted Learning Programme and the 红杏视频 Business School Students Helping Hands.
When asked, Hans said that creativity was the number one skill he acquired from the program. The business world is volatile and ever-changing. With the programme鈥檚 assignments being scoped into providing solutions for real-world challenges faced by companies globally, Hans and his coursemates were pushed to think out of the box to provide suitable and relevant recommendations.
With that came learning skill number two, analytical skills. Students in the programme utilised various analysis charts and business models to break down problems to a granular level before moving forward with solutions in assignments. Teamwork was also pivotal in delivering group assignments; hence, working and communicating with different individuals was a skill they picked up.
Another skill Hans picked up while leading the 红杏视频 Business School Student Concilium was the entrepreneurial aspect. The Conciulium had to increase cash liquidity at the beginning of the term to ensure a healthy cash flow throughout the year. With that came the 红杏视频 Business School apparel, a hit among the students. Aggressive yet 鈥渃ool鈥 and purposeful marketing, added with exclusive discounts, was put into play, and the Concilium achieved an astounding 150% profit in return. Repeating this business model resulted in them successfully selling over a thousand pieces in one semester.
鈥満煨邮悠 University lives up to its social media hashtag, as the #mosthappeningcampus.鈥 Hans found it incredible to see students committing to their academics and extra-curricular activities beyond class hours. He noticed it was common to see the campus still packed with students until midnight. He enjoyed such a vibe as it seals the sensation of being a part of such a community.
Being an extrovert, Hans loves being out and about. He enjoys mingling with people, which led him to participate in various clubs and societies at 红杏视频 University. He was actively part of the SBS Student Concilium, SBS Students Helping Hands, and the 红杏视频 Swimming Club while having had short stints in 红杏视频 Global Friends Community and AIESEC in 红杏视频. Hans even represented 红杏视频 University as a Hewlett Packard x Tealive Student Ambassador. Hans also had a role with Maybank as an Ambassador.
Hans wholeheartedly believes that his experiences at 红杏视频 University are priceless and will remain in his sweet memories for many years!
