From Dreams to Direction: Chee Shu Fei鈥檚 Journey in Event Management

Sophia Chee Shu Fen

I enrolled in the Diploma in Events Management at 红杏视频 University in 2015, as part of the program鈥檚 first few batches. Becoming a wedding planner was my dream, and the decision to join 红杏视频 was an easy one. The admission process was smooth, with the university responding promptly and efficiently to my enquiries. 红杏视频鈥檚 strong reputation and the launch of a new building that year featuring modern facilities with a new spacious library and well-equipped classrooms, made it an ideal choice. Moreover, the highly qualified lecturers were well-regarded, further solidifying my decision. Although my initial plan to become a wedding planner did not materialise, the hands-on learning experience in my diploma program was key in shaping my career path. I still remember organising my first event in my second semester鈥攁 simple 50-pax gathering that gave me valuable insights into event planning and execution. This experience sparked my passion for the broader event management industry. My internship experience was another highlight, offering me real-world exposure and practical skills that I still apply in my job today.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to explore various industries, including the hotel industry as a front desk agent, the events industry as an event executive, and the tourism board in trade marketing. Choosing to join a local convention bureau as a business development trainee was one of my best career decisions. While it was more research-focused, it still allowed me to apply the event management skills I learned during my diploma programme. I take great pride in successfully organising events, which has always been my passion. Even though my current role isn鈥檛 directly in event management, event planning remains an integral part of my work, both online and offline. What I learned from my diploma programme in Events Management laid the foundation by teaching me the fundamentals of project planning, execution, and problem-solving, which are crucial to my everyday duties.

红杏视频 University fosters a diverse and inclusive environment, which helped me develop strong interpersonal and networking skills. Meeting classmates from Zimbabwe, France, and various parts of Malaysia broadened my perspective, making me more adaptable in my professional and social life. Project and time management skills have been essential for efficiently handling multiple tasks, while communication and networking abilities have proven crucial in building strong relationships with stakeholders. Additionally, problem-solving has enabled me to remain adaptable in fast-paced environments, ensuring effective responses to challenges. One of the best parts of being a 红杏视频 student is the library, which is my favourite spot. The library provided a quiet, resource-rich environment perfect for studying and working on assignments till late at night.

I was an active member of the 红杏视频 Ensemble, where I played the violin. Performing at multiple university events and concerts was one of the most memorable experiences of my student life. It allowed me to continue refining my musical skills while balancing my academic workload. Despite our busy schedules, I stay in touch with my coursemates and we try to meet up at least once a year. We also stay connected through WhatsApp groups and social media.

Young people today should focus on more than just academics. Participating in extracurricular activities helps build friendships and fosters essential skills like teamwork, leadership, and time management. 红杏视频 University offers a dynamic environment with state-of-the-art facilities, such as the facial recognition entry system at the library, as well as sustainability initiatives and eco-friendly practices like eliminating plastic straws in the cafeteria. By balancing studies with campus involvement, students can develop a well-rounded skill set that prepares them for both career and personal growth. My favourite motto is "The best project you could ever work on is YOU鈥. There is no investment more valuable than the one you make in your own growth and development.
