1. REFUGEE STUDENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME

The Centre for Commercial Law & Justice (CCLJ) at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ University led a two-week Student Volunteer Programme that brought ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School students to the Refugee Learning Center, United World Academy (UWA), for an immersive community engagement experience.

The experience was structured around a three-stage framework—Educate, Engage, and Evolve (3E)—to ensure both meaningful impact and reflective learning.

Educate

Students began with a Refugee Education Support Workshop, where they gained insights into the refugee experience, resilience, and the complex challenges faced by refugee learners. In collaboration with UWA’s leadership and teachers, a needs analysis was conducted to identify appropriate, context-specific educational support.

Engage

Over the two-week period, students assumed hands-on roles as teaching assistants, activity leaders, and learning resource developers, working closely with teachers and refugee learners in the classroom. Student teams also facilitated workshops on key issues affecting youth today, including:

  • The risks of vaping
  • The harmful effects of bullying
  • The importance of personal hygiene
  • The hidden dangers of social media addiction

Evolve

The programme concluded with guided reflection, where students submitted individual reports documenting their personal journeys, key learnings, and how the experience shaped their understanding of social responsibility, impact, and the role business students can play in driving positive change.

Beyond the knowledge gained and skills developed, the programme’s most enduring outcome was the human connection forged between students, educators, and refugee learners. These moments of shared learning and mutual respect underscored the importance of compassion and understanding in advancing justice.

In an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and rapid technological change, this CCLJ initiative served as a powerful reminder that progress must remain grounded in humanity. Through empathy-driven engagement, students experienced firsthand how meaningful societal impact can be achieved when knowledge is paired with purpose.
