From Student to Standout: Building Your Brand
Let’s face it! Your first impression isn’t always made in person anymore. These days, it’s often your profile picture, your bio, or that post you shared last week. In a world where everyone’s online, you are your brand, and it’s time to make it count.
As a university student, building a personal brand online early on can open doors to internships, networking opportunities, scholarships and even job offers. And your digital presence can be the edge that sets you apart from the crowd.
So what is personal branding, really? Simply put, it’s the story you are telling, about your values, passions, skills and personality – across digital platforms. It’s an impression people form when they look at your online profiles, read your posts, or engage with your content. By using the platform strategically, you can showcase your expertise, share your knowledge and insights, and establish yourself as a future thought leader in your field.
The process of building a personal brand also encourages self-reflection. It pushes you to identify your strengths, clarify your values, and align your online presence with your career goals.
The best part? You don’t need to be famous, flawless, or a founder to start. You just need to be you, but with intention. Do remember! A strong personal brand is authentic, and it’s about showing the real you in a way that resonates with who you are and where you want to head.
To get started, you need to first define your brand by identifying your passions, skills, career goals and values you want to be associated with. This will be the foundation of the brand. Next, choose the social media platforms where your target audience spends their time, with LinkedIn, Instagram or Red-note being popular options for students. You do not need to be on every platform – just be present and consistent on the ones that matter most to your audience. Then, think of your bio as your elevator pitch. And consistently create and share valuable, engaging content aligned with your brand. Please do not wait until you become an ‘expert’ to start posting. Documenting your journey will showcase your personal growth or challenges. Most importantly, engage with your audience by responding to comments and participating in relevant conversations. A strong personal brand isn’t built in isolation; it is about connections. Follow professionals, peers, and organisations in your field. Comment meaningfully on their posts, join conversations, and collaborate with like-minded individuals.
Don’t wait until graduation to build a personal brand. Start Now! and your future self will thank you. And remember, whether you are passionate about sustainability, tech, education, or the creative arts, there is a space for you online. Use it wisely. Be Intentional. Inspire others!
