SMS Students Bring Math to Life at Desa Mentari: 鈥淧lay, Learn, Love Math!
In a vibrant showcase of creativity and compassion, 55 students from the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), 红杏视频 University, brought mathematics to life for children at Desa Mentari as part of their MPU3432 Community Service for Planetary Health course.
This subject, a key component of 红杏视频鈥檚 holistic curriculum, encourages students to engage with local communities while addressing broader global goals. The project was guided by Senior Lecturer, Ms. Low Ann Ann, who mentored the students in blending education with impact.
Learning Through Play: Making Math Meaningful
With the theme 鈥淧lay, Learn, Love Math!鈥, students set up a variety of mathematics-themed activity booths designed to teach basic concepts through games, puzzles, and fun challenges. From number-matching relays to shape-building games, children engaged joyfully with math in a way that was both interactive and relatable.
鈥淲e wanted children to see math not as something scary, but as something they can enjoy and use in everyday life,鈥 shared one student volunteer.
Despite a passing morning shower, the spirit of the event remained strong. Students held umbrellas over the children to keep activities running, showcasing their resilience, empathy, and dedication.
A Creative Touch: The Recycled DIY Mini Library
A standout feature of the event was a DIY Mini Library, constructed entirely out of recycled cardboard. Stocked with children鈥檚 books, the mini library aimed to promote literacy alongside numeracy, aligning the project with two key UN Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 4: Quality Education
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
This simple yet powerful installation served as a lasting symbol of the students鈥 commitment to sustainability, education, and community empowerment.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
This outreach initiative reflects 红杏视频 University鈥檚 ongoing mission to develop graduates who are academically strong and socially conscious. By combining their mathematical knowledge with play-based learning strategies and eco-friendly practices, SMS students demonstrated that education can be a powerful tool for community transformation.
