Joyce Ang: Rising to the Top - An ACCA Prizewinner’s Journey

joyce

I chose to study Accounting and Finance at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School due to its strong academic reputation and exceptional learning environment. ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School was well known for its accounting programmes and offered an accelerated pathway to the ACCA qualification, which was something I valued from the outset. I believed that studying at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School with a proven track record of producing high-achieving graduates would provide a solid foundation for my future.

The degree provided a well-rounded combination of lectures, hands-on assignments, and internship opportunities, all of which contributed to preparing me for the working world. I developed technical skills such as financial reporting, analytical thinking, and a strong grasp of ethical standards. Simultaneously, I honed soft skills like time management, teamwork, and adaptability. Being surrounded by supportive lecturers and motivated classmates also encouraged me to reflect on my goals and gain clarity on what I truly wanted in a career.

My academic journey was marked by proud moments. I was honoured to receive the Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award during convocation for academic excellence. Later, while pursuing the ACCA qualification at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ TES, I was named the ACCA Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) Malaysia Prize Winner. These recognitions resulted from the consistent effort, the invaluable guidance of my lecturers, and the robust academic structure at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ. The ACCA content helped me understand complex financial reporting standards and apply ethical judgment, both of which were essential for excelling in the SBR paper.

Another essential skill I developed during my studies was resilience. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, half of my degree transitioned to online learning. It was a challenging period, but I learned to stay disciplined, adapt quickly, and find effective ways to stay engaged with my studies. This experience taught me how to maintain focus and motivation, even in times of uncertainty.

I also had the opportunity to participate in the Peer Assisted Learning Programme (PALP) at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School, where selected students were appointed to support their peers in academic subjects. As a PALP leader, I mentored students in Principles of Business Finance and Financial Accounting. I conducted weekly online mentoring sessions, developed learning materials, and assisted them in enhancing their academic performance. This role allowed me to refine my communication, leadership, and organisational skills while deepening my understanding of the subjects I taught.

One of my most cherished memories from university was being part of the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ University Choir, where I served as Treasurer and an active member. The choir offered a creative outlet and a chance to unwind while enjoying music with friends. Through rehearsals and performances, I discovered the importance of community, balance, and finding joy beyond academics.
Reflecting on my time at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Business School, it was a truly transformative experience that provided me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take the next step in my journey. I am proud to be a ºìÐÓÊÓƵian and carry its values with me into the future.
