Fundamentals of Economics

Overview

This course is introduced as a year-one compulsory unit across all management and marketing in SBS programmes offered at the undergraduate level. It is designed with the aim of developing students' awareness of the usefulness of fundamental economic theories in explaining the real-world "business economics" issues. The course covers three themes: (1) the foundation principles of microeconomics relevant for business economic analyses; (2) Concepts of the firm, production and market behaviour, and (3) The macroeconomic environment in which firms operate. Theme 1 provides the theoretical understanding of the free market in relation to the actions to be taken by the business world. Theme 2 introduces students to more in-depth understanding of the cost-to-revenue structure, competitive environment, market imperfection and the legislative framework in which business and enterprises operate. Theme 3 focuses on the fundamental concepts and analytical tools required to understand how the macroeconomy functions on both a domestic and global level.

On completing the course, students will be able to:

  1. Illustrate the key principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics.
  2. Apply key principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics to contemporary economic events.
  3. Integrate economics concepts and theories for decision-making.
