Start German: Language and Culture

Overview

This elective course offers students a practical introduction to the German language and an insight into the cultures of German-speaking countries. Designed for beginners with no prior knowledge of German, the course focuses on developing basic communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will learn to engage in simple conversations, understand everyday texts, and explore cultural topics such as traditions, festivals, and social norms in German speaking countries. The course encourages intercultural awareness and prepares students for further language learning or academic exchange opportunities in German-speaking contexts.

On completing the course, students will be able to:

  1. Communicate in basic spoken and written German using familiar expressions and simple phrases related to everyday contexts
  2. Demonstrate understanding of key grammatical structures to form simple sentences and questions in the present and past tense
  3. Apply intercultural awareness and language skills to participate in basic conversations in realistic scenarios
