Promoting Conscious Water Usage in the Wider Community
SDG 6.5.7
ºìÐÓÊÓƵ University actively promotes conscious water usage and sustainable water management practices within the wider community through outreach, environmental restoration, and educational initiatives. These community-based programmes aim to build public awareness of how ecosystems, waste management, and urban planning influence water quality, availability, and conservation. Through hands-on participation and education, local residents and volunteers are encouraged to adopt responsible behaviours that protect both freshwater and marine environments.
The ELMINA Urban Biodiversity Corridor (EUBC) Restoration Project featured a large-scale tree-planting activity, where 600 saplings were planted to form a green corridor within the urban landscape. This effort not only supports biodiversity restoration but also contributes to water management by improving soil permeability, reducing surface runoff, and enhancing groundwater recharge. The presence of vegetation in urban areas plays a crucial role in regulating water flow, filtering pollutants, and mitigating the effects of urban flooding.
The community beach clean-up at Pantai Tanjung Piai focused on marine conservation and public education. Local residents were engaged in removing litter from the shoreline while learning about the environmental impacts of marine pollution. Participants were taught proper waste disposal practices and the importance of keeping beaches and coastal waters clean. This activity reinforced the connection between human behaviour and water health, highlighting how coastal clean-ups contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems and sustainable water management.
Through these initiatives, ºìÐÓÊÓƵ University demonstrates its commitment to promoting water consciousness beyond campus boundaries. By engaging local communities in tree planting, waste reduction, and conservation education, the University empowers participants to understand the interconnection between land use, pollution, and water systems. These ongoing efforts strengthen public awareness and encourage long-term behavioural change towards responsible and sustainable water usage in daily life.
