Educational Opportunities on Good Water Management
SDG 6.5.1
Free Educational Opportunities for Local Communities
ºìÐÓÊÓƵ University provides continuous free educational opportunities for local communities to learn about good water management through collaborative programmes and community outreach. Since 2022, in partnership with local NGO Free Tree Society KL, the University has conducted free educational programmes focused on water-efficient gardening and plant care. These initiatives aim to raise awareness and promote responsible water use among students and the local community.
In 2024, the program expanded to include hands-on activities such as water-conscious planting and composting. Participants were introduced to rainwater harvesting systems for non-potable uses like garden irrigation, helping reduce dependence on municipal water supplies.
As the activities were held at Taman Tugu rainforest, the participants were further taught the role of natural ecosystems in water management. Participants learned how reforestation supports water retention, groundwater recharge, and overall watershed health—reinforcing the importance of forest conservation in sustainable water practices.
Another major initiative, GREduAction at Taman Melawati was carried out in 2024 to promote education and awareness in water management, with a focus on the conservation and rehabilitation of riverbanks, urban landscapes, and coastal areas. The program took place along the upstream stretch of Sungai Klang near the Klang Gates Dam, where volunteers participated in riverbank clean-up activities. This initiative, held at least three times a year, aims to protect freshwater ecosystems by preventing pollution, promoting responsible waste disposal, and rehabilitating degraded riverbanks. It also serves as a platform to educate the local community on the importance of maintaining clean waterways for long-term water conservation.
These initiatives have become effective community-based platforms for promoting good water management practices and long-term water conservation awareness.
Paid Educational Opportunities for Local Communities
The University also provides paid educational opportunities for local communities to enhance their knowledge of effective water management practices through our micro-credentials program and master's program under the University’s Jeffrey Sachs Centre on Sustainable Development. These programs are designed to empower local communities with the tools and expertise needed to address sustainable-related challenges in both personal and professional contexts.
