Doctor of Philosophy (Computing)

Overview

This research-driven programme aims to develop students' research skills at an advanced level in some crucial areas of computing. Candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy (Computing) at ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ University will be leaders and innovators in the fields of computing, information and communications technology.

The core domains of this programme are: Computer Networking,  Information Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, Image Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Haptics and Software Engineering.

By working under the close guidance of supervisors, students will be exposed to the many aspects of research activities including conducting a critical analysis of the literature, identifying areas of contribution, compiling information, and communicating ideas through journal publications and conference presentations.

Programme Structure

Modules

Candidates are required to take three modules namely Research Methodology, Directed Readings and Research Proposal to enhance their knowledge in research, in addition to the thesis component.

Thesis

The PhD is awarded based on the successful completion of a thesis. The thesis should demonstrate proficiency, criticality and mastery in the subject or chosen area of research.

Entry Requirements

Master’s Degree

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computing or related fields with first-class (CGPA of 3.67 or higher) or its equivalent; AND Undergo internal assessment; AND Meet any other requirement set by the Academic Senate; OR
  • A Master’s degree in Computing or related fields as accepted by Academic Senate; OR
  • A Master’s degree in non-Computing fields with minimum of five (5) years of working experience in the field of computing must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses; OR
  • Other qualifications equivalent to Master’s degree in Computing or related fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses; OR
  • A Master’s degree in non-computing fields with less than five (5) years of working experience in the field of computing or related fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses and internal assessment.*
    *Rigorous internal assessment and candidate’s working experiences will determine whether the candidate can be exempted from prerequisite courses.

Other Qualifications

Any other qualifications will be considered on a case-to-case basis and subject to the approval and acceptance by University Senate.

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS 6.0

Note: Candidates who have completed a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in English would have met the language requirement.

Application Procedure

A) Applicants will be required to submit the following completed and signed documents:

  • ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ Postgraduate application form
  • One (1) passport-sized photograph
  • Research statement: The statement should briefly describe the research question that the applicant has discussed with his/her future PhD supervisor
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Scholarship application form (if any)

B) The following true copies of documents must be certified:

  • Passport (all pages including blank pages - for international students)/Identity card (for Malaysian students)
  • English Language Qualification (IELTS/TOEFL/MUET/others) - for international students
  • Academic qualifications/results (Certificates and complete transcripts) (Degree/master’s degree/others)
  • International applicants must provide certified copies of their entire course transcripts including explanations of the mark schemes used and, where possible, an indication of their class ranking/position in class

C) Two (2) reference letters

Documents will be processed once the application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. We will notify applicant of our final decision as soon as an appropriate supervisory team has been identified.

Research Proposal

The research proposal should comprise between 1,000 and 1,500 words (excluding references), and covers the following structure:

  1. An appropriate title for the research project (designated supervisor if known)
  2. Introduction and justification of the study, which includes:
    • Research background
    • Problem statement
    • Research objective(s)
    • Research question(s)/hypothesis
  3. Literature review
  4. Research methodology
  5. Proposed research schedule
  6. List of references

  • Master by Research: 30% tuition fee waiver
  • PhD: 50% tuition fee waiver 

Award Criteria: ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ graduates who are meeting the entry requirement for the Master by Research or PhD programmes


Scholarship

Programme: Master by Research and PhD   
Mode of study: Full-time   
Financial Support:

  • Master by Research: 60% tuition fee waiver
  • PhD: 100% tuition fee waiver 

Award Criteria: ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ graduates who are meeting the entry requirement for the Master by Research or PhD programmes. CGPA >= 3.5 or Merit (or equivalent)

Programme: Master by Research and PhD   
Mode of study: Full-time   
Financial Support:

  • Master by Research: Not eligible
  • PhD: 100% tuition fee waiver including registration and resource fees. Cost of living allowance of RM3,000 per month for 36 months

Award Criteria: ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ graduates who are meeting the entry requirement for the PhD programmes.   
CGPA >= 3.5 or Merit (or equivalent). One (1) published journal article indexed in WOS/Scopus as first or corresponding author. Eligible applicants will be interviewed, and Studentship awards will be given on a competitive basis

*Bursary is only offered to ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ graduates from ºìÐÓÊÓÆµ Education Group higher education institutions.
