Short Courses: Cultural Heritage and Sustainability

Overview

Programme NameCulture and Heritage in Tourism
OverviewThis course explores how culture and heritage shape the development of communities in the context of tourism, while emphasising the importance of sustainability in cultural heritage consumption. The programme will discuss both tangible (for example, handicrafts and arts, traditional costumes, historical sites, and food) and intangible aspects of culture and heritage (for example, traditional practices, festivals, and music performances). The regional focus hereby lies on Malaysia and Southeast Asia, however, examples from other countries and regions will also be presented, to highlight the similarities and differences between communities.

Participants will also explore the importance of sustainability in cultural and heritage consumption, and align these ideas with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This programme aims to advocate for more sustainable practices in cultural heritage tourism and promotes greater benefits for tourists, tourism businesses and most importantly, the local communities.
